Today in the United States, only 35% of high school seniors can read at a high school level. There must be a crash program to bring the literacy rate of the American people up to 95% over a generation.
Diane intends to restore a classical standard of education in our public schools. This means not only English language literacy but also the study of classical languages, including Greek and Latin. Physics, biology, and chemistry classrooms must include laboratories so that the students can reproduce the experiments of the greatest scientists of the past.
The curriculum must also include classical music, classical drama, and the plastic arts. American students need to master the history of Western civilization and study the contributions of other civilizations. Study of American history must include reading of original documents.
The purpose of education is to develop character and produce individuals who contribute to society as a whole.
Home economics should be taught in every high school as well as vocational arts.
Physical and mental health are related. Children should be expected to meet physical fitness and coordination standards appropriate to age and development.
